Public Meeting 31st May on Environment Levy Use

There is to be a Public Meeting this Friday, 31 May at 6.00pm, Bowral Memorial Hall on the Use of the Environment Levy to fund a Regional Gallery

Wingecarribee Shire Council is proposing in its draft budget, now on public exhibition, to indirectly transfer $94,000 per year from the Environment Levy funds to the operation of the proposed regional gallery.  The community has until Monday 27 May to make a submission If you wish to object, please send an email to:

While we support the concept of the gallery, its operation should not be funded from the Environment Levy.  Council argues that the money is to cover the most of the salary of the Manager Environment and Sustainability, because he supervises the Levy.  However, we believe his position is one that Council is required to have anyway.  The Levy has been running for 20 years, and this is the first time the charge has been made against the Levy.  We believe it is more than coincidental that last year Council committed large funds to the gallery, without identifying where the money was to come from.. They have now discovered that they did not have the money and have come up with this way of doing so.
Council is presently preparing a compromise solution.  Please come along and listen to Council explain their position. You will have an opportunity to speak for or against the compromise and sign a petition at the Meeting on Friday.
